Civic representatives have agreed to support continued funding for the Safer York Partnership, which works to reduce crime and disorder in York.

They backed a grant of £179,310 to support the group's work on combating anti-social behaviour, community relations, drug and alcohol-related crimes and youth offending.

Council officers found that the partnership's performance and management had been "satisfactory" and was likely to further improve.

A Home Office crime reduction team which visited the group last year also gave "positive" feedback on its work.

However, Government funding changes could see a reduction of £40,000 in the amount of central funding available to the group.

Coun Steve Galloway (Lib Dem) said the drive towards solving street level crime had "improved immeasurably" thanks to the group.

But he said the Home Office's proposal to reduce funding would "send out entirely the wrong signal to the people of York".

He added: "The Safer York Partnership is now justifying its existence."
