New Earswick moved into the last eight of the County Double Rinks Championship when they beat Doncaster at Huntington Road 49-43.

Paul Dawson, Brian Gray, Barry Harrison and Eddie Gill were fighting to stay in the game when they were 10-5 down after eight ends then 16-13 after 13 ends but a five on the next gave them the lead for the first time at 18-16.

Two ends later the game was level at 18-18 but then four winning ends and most importantly a five on the 20th gave the home side a 29-19 win.

In the other rink, Bob Edwards, Ken Harrison, Barry Johnson and Mick Stannard must have felt that they had the game won when they were 20-13 ahead with three ends to play, but they were hit with a three, a two then a six on the last end to go down 24-20.

York's Ladies team enjoyed success again in the North Eastern League beating Selby 76-58, picking up eight points with three winning rinks.

Brenda Martin, Doreen Arnett, Sylvia Walker and Ella Armitt were losing 10-8 after twelve ends and won all but one of the last nine to take the game 21-12.

Joyce Gee, Maureen Wallace, Carol Pink and Pat Lofthouse were trailing 13-5 after 12 ends and 15-10 with four ends to play but then finished in style with a five which levelled the scores then three two's to win 21-15.

At Selby, Clarice Johnston, Margaret Smith, Liz Worling and Ann Sharpley were trailing 8-2 after seven ends before winning seven ends on the trot to lead 15-8. After that the scores on the remaining ends were shared, the final score being 21-14.

Pat Bracken, Irene Paylor, Jean Williams and Maureen Robinson were holding their own in a tight game when they were leading 8-7 after 11 ends but then could only score five more shots and went down 17-13.

Bottom of the table New Earswick's Ladies went down 87-54 defeat against North Cave picking up just two points.

The only Earswick winning rink came from Maureen Cooper, Barbara Brigham, Joan Lister and Ann Thompson who had a comfortable 16-9 lead with four ends to play and managed to hold off a spirited fightback from the visitors to win 17-14.

The other home rink of Kath Sykes, Maureen Shorrocks, Clarice Robinson and Dot Kay were level at 13-13 after 16 ends but then lost four out of the five remaining ends and went down 21-15.

At North Cave, Liz Jerrum, Diane Hardy, Audrey Shingles and Kath Hardcastle won the first end lost the next two and were then always chasing to get back into the game. The home side scoring eight shots without reply over the last three ends to win 25-13.

Peg Walker, Colleen Raw, June Barker and Margaret Blows faced an uphill battle after going 16-2 down after nine ends. They hit back to win four of the next five ends to narrow the gap to 17-9 but North Cave stepped up a gear to win the last seven ends and ease to a 27-9 victory.
