THE steep steps from the passageway off St Mary's Square might seem a bit daunting, but a level access is possible from Castlegate.

This elevated caf provides wholesome fare, much of it vegetarian. Menus are on tables and specials chalked up by the servery.

Although it was half term the caf was not crowded. Maybe this venue does not naturally attract families.

Up to noon a 'morning fix' is on offer. This is a hot drink with croissant and jam for £2.20. An enterprising notice suggested "have your coffee, hot chocolate or mocha mugged for 20p extra or tea for 10p less".

For reasons which may be obvious I decided not to have the soup. It was billed as 'Pee and tarragon with hunks of bread' at £3.20.

Finding nothing unusual on the menu, we resorted to a special. Ann chose the crostini. This was roasted fennel, courgette and brie on ciabatta together with tomato and greenery (£3.80).

For me, the quesadilla. This was mushroom, sun-dried tomato and rice in a tortilla wrap (£3.90). My plate had the usual garnish.

We both enjoyed half our choice before carefully swapping plates! This resulted in two satisfied customers finding it difficult to decide which choice we preferred. I have to admit to indulging in a portion of Dutch apple pie with cream (as an alternative to fromage fraise). At £2.10 the tart was tasty and the pastry light.

The staff were kept busy producing a range of dishes from what appeared to be a cramped working area.

We tried to soak up some of the atmosphere but felt the venue was on the stark side. Rigid chairs and bland decor did not encourage us to linger over coffee, mugged or otherwise.
