FOR the second season running a team from Haxby has beaten the York and District Netball league first division leaders and champions of 28 years Civil Service 1.

Haxby 1 won 29-27 to become only the third team to beat Service in the 28-year history of the competition.

Second-placed Haxby were a goal down after the first quarter but pulled back to lead by two goals at half-time.

Service hit back to make it 22-22 at the end of the first quarter.

Haxby's young side were impressive in defence with captain Emma Caywood in excellent form.

The victorious Haxby team was Caywood, Donna Cox, who was playing fifth division netball last season, Yvonne Petruso, Gemma Shaw, Lynn Officer, Shauna Mulligan, Julie Beavers with sideline support from reserve Sally Robinson.

Caywood and Petruso were in the Haxby 2 team which beat Service last season.

With only a few games remaining, the championship will be decided over the next few weeks with the top three having to play each another.

Haxby 5 ensured that no team in the league has kept a clean sheet this season when they beat previously unbeaten Bay Horse Cougars 19-17.
