CITY of York I eased their relegation fears with a priceless 3-2 home win against fellow strugglers Brooklands Manchester University II.

The victory saw York move to ninth place, four points clear of Brooklands, in the Northern Hockey league premier division.

After a lively start by York, Chris Wilson got the opening goal with a reverse stick sweep.

Broolands equalised ten minutes later but York almost regained the lead when a Glyn Humphrey shot was just inches over the bar.

Brooklands went ahead in the second half but York responded well with centre forward Mark Little capitalising on a defensive mistake to drive home the equaliser.

The home side gained victory from a basic short corner routine with Nick Carter hammering home the winner. Even then York survived a disallowed Brooklands goal after a short corner.

The match marked the York debut of Alex Gutteridge, the former Acomb player, who has been playing EHA National League hockey with Belper.

With Harrogate drawing with Durham University, York were able to move above their North Yorkshire rivals but face a tough match next week against a Ben Rhydding side still smarting from defeat at the hands of Sheffield University Bankers.
