MORE than 150 volunteers were honoured for their work on the Millennium Volunteers project at a ceremony in York attended by Countdown presenter Richard Whiteley.

A 500-strong audience of friends, family and representatives from the community attended the ceremony at York Theatre Royal last night.

The volunteers were presented with awards by Mr Whiteley and the Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton.

They were commended for the time they had dedicated to the scheme and were awarded for completing 50 hours, 100 hours and 200 hours.

York Millennium Volunteers is a partnership between Askham Bryan College, City of York Council, York St John College, York University, York College, York Council for Voluntary Service and York and North Yorkshire Guidance Services. The university is the lead partner. More than 600 Millennium Volunteers, aged 16 to 24, have given about 50,000 hours to York's community, equivalent to 28 years of working life. They have carried out different projects, such as creating a garden at Lime Trees, which provides care for young people with emotional and psychological problems, and promoting York Nightstop, a charity which arranges emergency accommodation for people threatened with homelessness.

Before the awards ceremony a Countdown contest was held between two teams, headed by John Walker from York Nightstop and Maureen Carlill from Lime Trees.
