CHRIS Titley's interesting article on Dr Beeching (March 24) is spoilt somewhat by a number of errors.

The Pickering to Seamer line did not close in 1931 but from June 5, 1950.

Barbara Castle, as Transport Minister, did not approve withdrawal of passenger services from Poppleton and Hammerton stations. They are on the York to Harrogate line and remain open to this day. The stations which closed as a result of the withdrawal of passenger services between Harrogate and Northallerton were Ripon and Melmerby.

The only intermediate stations remaining open to regular passenger services between York and Scarborough from September 22, 1930 were, and still are, Malton and Seamer.

Under Beeching, the number of lines entering Whitby were reduced from three, not four, to one.

Tadcaster Station did close to passengers in 1964, from January 6 to be precise, and was one of the first Beeching closures. Its demise was not too surprising given that at the end of its life it 'enjoyed' just one train (at 07.56) each weekday from Church Fenton to Wetherby and Leeds, and none whatsoever in the opposite direction.
