A COMMUNITY radio station in York is appealing to readers of the Evening Press to come up with a name for the new project.

The pilot scheme is part of York's Without Walls initiative, which is looking at all aspects of the city's future.

Organisers are appealing for help from the public to make it a real success - including inspiration for the station name.

Volunteer Kenny Lieske said: "This is a great time for people to get involved - from simply thinking up a top name for us, to coming along and taking part.

"It is a very exciting time for the project, we are in the very early stages, and people can really make a difference right now."

The community radio station is being set up in association with the Community Volunteer Service and with help from City of York Council.

The scheme is currently being run by a tight group of organisers, who are looking for volunteers from all areas to help make the station a success.

The group aims, when the station is fully set up, to broadcast for an initial four weeks a year, with additional broadcasts on the internet.

From administration to fund raisers, technical experts to DJs of tomorrow, everyone is welcome to attend a public meeting being held to launch the project.

Project volunteer Emily Harvey said: "Radio is a democratic medium and we wish to make the project relevant and accessible to a whole range of different people.

"It is an ideal opportunity for local people to share and develop their skills and to collaborate on a number of different levels."

The public meeting will be held at the Denham Room, Priory Street Centre, York, on Tuesday, at 5.30pm.

Everyone interested in the project is welcome to attend, or contact Kenny Lieske on 01904 627438.
