VISITORS to a 15th century York attraction have been baffled by its latest addition - a medieval commode.

Barley Hall, has installed the "stool of ease" in the Great Chamber, as part of a project to recreate the medieval home of York alderman and goldsmith William Snawsell.

The pot was crafted in oak by David Blake, of Powys, Wales, and created by John Hudson, of Mirfield, West Yorkshire.

Gill Page, manager of Barley Hall, said: "It's already attracted a lot of attention. We like everyone to pick up pottery and try out the furniture, but we're quite glad they haven't in this case. People can't really believe what they're seeing."

Visitors to the hall can see the parlour, buttery, pantry and storeroom, furnished as they would have been 500 years ago.

This weekend's attractions include a visit by the Medical History Group to share the secrets of medicine in the past.
