Heworth duo Dean Wharton and Jim Batt conquered a strong swirling wind at Filey to win the East Riding Alliance President's Silver Salver.

Batt, a three-handicapper, and Wharton (14) teamed up to fire a marvellous ten-under-par 60 to finish five strokes ahead of their nearest rivals.

Heworth also headed the team scores with 199 - four ahead of Malton and Norton.

Star-Crossed Heworth

HEWORTH snatched York Union of Golf Clubs' Cross Trophy when rounds 11 and 12, the final two rounds in the competition, were played at Fulford GC and York GC last Sunday.

In weather more fitting to a summer competition, Heworth overcame a one point deficit to defeat Fulford by a final total of 2377 to 2380. The three points advantage came from the Heworth team at the York club.

However, none of the Heworth team were in the prizes, which were won by Forest of Galtres pair Ian Collett and Ian Young with the only 64 on the day.

Scores of 65 were then carded by eight teams, countback deciding that second prize went to Aldwark Manor's R Gunson and J Taylor, with Pike Hills pair J Dibbin and D Storey third.

Aldwark Manor provided the winning pair at Fulford. Two clear of the field were Christian Alpin and David Cosen with a 65. Second were D Page and J Neal, of Forest Park, and third were G Almond and P England (Boothferry), ahead of three other pairs on 64.

Selby member Terry Gath and club pro Nick Ludwell are eyeing a place in the sun.

The pair took a biog step towards a luxury five-day trip to San Lorenzo in Portugal by winning the club qualifying competition for the Lombard Trophy.

Gath, a 12-handicapper who has been playing golf for 20 years, won his club event with a nett score of 39.

Now he and Ludwell, 31, the former European Tour pro who has been the club professional at Selby for three months will now play together in the regional final at Sand Moor, Leedsm in May 21 where they will play one round of better-ball medal play.

The winners of 16 regional finals through Britain and Ireland will enjoy an all expenses paid trip to compete at San Lorenzo from September 5-9.

Also through to Sand Moor are amateur Allan Ashby and his Bridlington club pro, Anthony Howarth.

PETER A Jones, who joined Fulford last year, had a round to remember as he won the club's opening stableford competition of the season with 48 points following a gross 77 off his 17 handicap. His handicap has now been reduced to 14.

In ideal scoring conditions with a lot of run on the fairways, 37 players managed to beat par.

Fulford have been drawn to meet Doncaster at Easingwold in the first round of the Yorkshire inter-club foursomes. Other ties include: York v Pike Hills (at The Oaks), Pike Hills v Hallamshire (Wetherby), Pannal v Filey (York), Garforth v Heworth (Garforth), Wakefield v Harrogate (Pontefract and District).

KILNWICK Percy GC are holding a Texas Scramble Open on Easter Monday, April 21, with start times available from 9.30am onwards.

PGA pro Guy Milner has been standing in at the club for Joe Townhill, who has taken a temporary break to do a spot of coaching in Abu Dhabi.

Renton's hole-in-one

USING a seven iron at hole 16, Peter Renton registered his first ace in 30 years of golf, during the last of the winter competitions at Forest of Galtres.

Renton went on to gross par the course which from an 11-handicap gave him nett 61.

But amazingly, with the course playing so well, Renton finished down in seventh place.

Dave Wilson (26) netted 60, beating on countback Pat Little (20), John Barker (19) and Tony Hinder (12), who also grossed the course 72.

... and Mike's

MIKE Williams, a well-known Ryedale newsagent and a 23-handicap member of Malton and Norton Golf Club, has holed-in-one at the club's 169 yards 17th hole using a seven iron. Playing in a friendly four ball, it was his first ace since starting to play golf about 20 years ago.

Catterick in good Health

CATTERICK is to host the Northern Area Finals of the Health Perception Ladies Championship on Monday, June 23.

The final will be on Wentworth's prestigious East Course on Thursday, September 25.
