ONCE the planners got to work, the proposal to revive a rail service to Haxby/Strensall soon became a very lame duck. At the presentation some time ago in Strensall, it became apparent that simply stopping a train was not on. It would interfere too much with the Scarborough timings!

The "new" station was to be on the site of the old station, itself closed many years ago due to lack of support and the competition of road transport. Strensall is much changed and the centre of gravity of the population of today is more on the other side of the village.

A simple halt between Moor Lane and York Road would have been about right. Take a bus from Barley Rise through the village to catch a train? No thanks.

The train service into York would mean a good walk into the city centre for the fit and a bus for the not so active.

However, the kiss of death comes from the proposed rolling stock. The words used were "available units". The "available units" on the Knaresborough service through Poppleton must be some of the oldest stock still in use. Some future for Haxby/Strensall.

It can't succeed, stop wasting money on a lost cause. Strategic Rail have it right.
