AN AMBITIOUS scheme to redevelop a former girls' college has been described as an "Austrian-style chalet" and a "pseudo-barn conversion" by the York Civic Trust.

The plan to convert and extend York College for Girls in Low Petergate, creating a restaurant, five retail outlets and 17 apartments, was discussed by City of York Council's planning and transport (city centre area) committee.

But the scheme was temporarily halted to allow a number of changes to be made to the design details.

At the meeting Peter Brown from the Civic Trust described the design as an "Austrian-style chalet" and a "pseudo-barn conversion".

Mr Brown said the trust welcomed many parts of the scheme, but could not support the planned new buildings at the rear of Low Petergate, and said the scheme was disrespectful to the nearby Holy Trinity Church.

But architect Malcolm Payne said the design was very sympathetic and would open up new views of York Minster.

He said: "We are restoring these buildings to a high quality and one of the things we need to do is bring these buildings to beneficial use. They are at risk and here is a chance to restore them."

There was general approval of the demolition of the existing gymnasium building, but concern about the design details.

Coun Charles Hall said: "I have concerns about the new modern part being added there so close to the song school.

"I do feel it's a but too much and really I could not support the addition of these new buildings in that position."

Coun Janet Looker said: "I share Charles's concerns, although I could see that some new buildings could be appropriate."
