THE 'Jorvik Warrior' Jamie Warters is set to be handed a dream return to his home city should he overcome his next opponent.

The York cruiserweight will face Birmingham's Michael Pinnock at the KC Stadium in Hull next Thursday - just two weeks after his points win over Darren Ashton - and should he complete a demolition job on the 37-year-old journeyman, then it will move towards a shot at the Central Area title.

The Central Area arm of the British Boxing Board of Control are keen for current holder Denzil Browne to defend the title after a two-year absence from the ring

And with Warters' trainer Steve Pollard revealing that the early plans are for any tilt at the Area crown to be held at the Barbican in October or early next year, this would throw up a mouth-watering clash for local boxing fans.

Leeds-based Browne built up a strong following in the area having been a key member of the Henry Wharton stable for several years, so any bout with home-grown favourite Warters is sure to be a big seller.

As reported in Saturday's Evening Press, Warters is keen on a treating his loyal and highly vocal York following to a night on big fight action on his own manor.

But it seems that ambition has moved closer to reality, especially now Warters has teamed up with York businessman Colin Cain, who is now backing the Warrior.

Pollard told the Evening Press: "We are now considering a show in York, either early next year or, if it can be arranged, maybe later this year.

"It all depends on what sort of deal can be sorted out, but ideally it would be for the Central Area title.

"After speaking to Jamie's backer Colin (Cain), it seems possible something could be arranged at the Barbican with us as promoters.

"He (Colin) sold nine tables at the Willerby Manor for Jamie's last fight, which was very good - it was a third of all the people there - so there is the interest."

First Warters must deal with ever-durable Pinnock a week today, before looking at possible bouts in May as part of a Prince Promotions card, on June 12 and then again in August.

And with Warters showing a marked improvement in form with his comfortable points win over Stoke's Ashton, Pollard wants to see his charge put Pinnock away.

"Jamie is looking really good and working well in the gym," said Pollard. "He has got his confidence back after beating Darren Ashton and is looking more relaxed.

"Jamie is one of these lads that needs his confidence and now that he has got that, I expect him to stop Pinnock.

"There is no doubt he is a tough, durable kid, but I will be looking for Jamie to finish him."

Warters will be one of the top names on a quality six-fight card at the KC Stadium. Tickets for the night are priced at £10 for a special seating area especially for children and OAPS, and between £15-30 for adults.
