FORMER York City midfielder Scott Jordan has been released by Scarborough and is giving up the game.

The 27-year-old who scored the goal at Bootham Crescent which ultimately beat Manchester United in the League Cup in 1995, suffered a cruciate knee injury just after Christmas and has given up waiting for an operation.

He said: "If I had known that nothing was going to happen, I would have joined the waiting list to have the job done on the NHS, but now I am packing the game up and am going to find myself a job outside of football.

"To be honest, I am disillusioned with the game and do not want to play part-time for anyone - and apart from that, when I get a job I will not be able to afford to have two months off so I won't be having the operation."

Jordan is one of a number of players released by Boro boss Russ Slade, who said: "We are probably facing a wage-capping rule so we are taking decisions with that in mind.

"Some of the players have been made offers which they are unhappy with - but it is up to them to decide, as there will be a lot of players looking for clubs and we have to cut our cloth, accordingly".

The players who have not been offered contracts are Neil Campbell, another former Minsterman, who spent the last couple of months on loan at Leigh, Darren Connell, Olivier Brassart and Bimbo Fatokun.

A number of players have accepted offers, including Karl Rose, David Pounder, Michael Price, Leigh Walker, Tom Raw, Scott Kerr and Keith Gilroy.

"In addition to these, I am hopeful that David Ridler, Mohammed Sillah, Gary Cohen and Andy Woods will be indicating that they will be signing on the dotted line very soon," added Slade.

There are several players who are still sitting on the fence and these are Richard Dryden, Mark Hotte, Gareth Stoker, Steve Baker and Paul Shepherd, but Slade has let it be known that he will not wait too long for them to make up their minds.

Former Middlesbrough striker Anthony Ormerod, who had a spell at Bootham Crescent on loan, and David Henderson will be invited to Scarborough's pre-season training to prove their fitness, after missing the end of the campaign through injury.

Shaun Rennison, who suffered an horrendous knee injury early in the season, is out of contract, but may be offered on off-field role at the club.

Jordan's decision to quit follows a similar move by Darlington's ex-City striker, Glenn Naylor, who has left the game because of injury.
