A SUBSTANTIAL improvement in exam results by a Selby school has led to special recognition by education ministers.

Staff at Barlby High School, in York Road, Barlby, are to benefit from an extra £19,200 after GCSE results rose from 42 per cent of candidates gaining five passes A-C in 1999 to 66 per cent in 2002.

The money is part of a School Achievement Award, and the school is the only one in the Selby area to achieve the prestigious prize.

The head teacher of the high school, the Rev Francis Lofthouse, received a letter from David Miliband, MP, Minister for School Standards, informing him of the news.

Mr Miliband wrote: "The hard work and dedication of teaching and support staff are crucial to a school's success.

"Thank you for your leadership. Please convey the thanks of ministers to all your staff for their hard work and commitment."

Mr Loftus said he was very pleased to see the efforts of staff rewarded in this way after four years of improved results.

The school's governing body will decide how best to distribute the award.
