THE first stage of a multi-billion pound high-speed rail network which will run close to York has been given the go-ahead, according to reports at the weekend.

The Government's Strategic Rail Authority is said to have approved the first stage of line, which will shadow parts of the East Coast Main Line.

York-based WS Atkins is the consultant in the scheme, which is expected to cost £36 billion and will run from London to Scotland.

The London to Birmingham section, which the Government is said to have approved, could provide a journey time of 30 minutes.

This stage is set to cost £6 billion to £8 billion, with a large part of the expense gong on new stations.

The route will go through the middle of the country and then towards York up to Newcastle and then to Edinburgh.
