ON this night 60 years ago, 19 Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron departed their base at Scampton to carry out one of the most heroic, and precise, examples of flying of the Second World War. Eight aircraft and 53 crew-members never returned.
To commemorate the 60th anniversary of this event, York Branch RAFA have arranged for 617 Squadron historian Jim Shortland to give an illustrated lecture, detailing the story of what was to become known as The Dams Raid. This ticket-only event - limited to 280 - will be held at Tempest Anderson Hall, Museum Gardens, York, on Friday, September 26, 2003, (doors open at 6.45pm for 7.30pm start).
Tickets are £5, and reservations can be made by phoning 01904 426418 or 01904 639543.
All proceeds will go to the York Branch Wings Appeal which provides welfare, support, and comradeship to the whole of the RAF family, past and present.
