YORK shot to the top of the Oxbridge Yorkshire ECB Premier League by virtue of victories over Doncaster and fellow title-chasers Scarborough who, themselves, had beaten leaders, Cleethorpes on Saturday.

Ironically, York's victims on Saturday, Doncaster, trounced the Lincolnshire club yesterday.

On Saturday, York seemed to be facing a mountain as Doncaster's openers, Simon Widdup and Tariq Aziz, mustered 132 in the first 30 overs.

Eventually York's bowlers achieved control and limited Doncaster to 100 runs in their remaining 25 overs. England Under-19 off-spinner Dan Broadbent was the main architect of success, taking four wickets as the South Yorkshire batters succumbed to the pressure to close at 231-6.

Despite losing Simon Mason early, York's batsmen fed on a quality batting track to win by eight wickets with almost eight overs to spare.

Spearhead of the victory was Steve Piercy, who batted throughout for an excellent century and received fine support from Rob Flack and Marcus Wood.

Yesterday's saw Scarborough arrive at Clifton Park on the back of a narrow victory over Cleethorpes.

They elected to bat and, like Doncaster, got off to a sound start, posting 81 off 27 overs but York's spin twins, Kiwi Jeetan Patel and Broadbent, began to tighten their grip and, when the last ten business overs arrived, they claimed six wickets between them for only 36 runs to give York a modest target of 155 runs.

York soon began to make the task mountainous as they steadily lost wickets with Will Mallory showing himself fully the equal of the York spinners as he went on to claim five wickets.

Mike Davis and Broadbent came together and put on 48 until Davies was deceived by Mallory's slower ball.

The tension increased as York's scoring rate slowed and Patel left quickly. Will Warne helped put on 23 in 13 grafting overs, but York lost three wickets with less than 15 runs required as former team-mate Rich Gilbert returned to claim Warne and Broadbent.

York were left with six overs for the last pair Greg How and Nigel Durham to secure eight runs for victory, which How grabbed with consummate square cut boundary.
