SCHOOL caretaker Elsie King will be hanging up her broom and donning a posh frock for her latest job.

Mrs King, who has worked at Foston Primary School, near Malton, for more than 30 years, has been invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace for her dedicated community service.

Head teacher Susan Taylor said Mrs King was an essential part of school life.

"She was a pupil here and her son was here too, she's just part of the school," she said.

"She comes to all our fundraisers, services and special assemblies."

Mrs King, who admitted to being "the wrong side of 70", said she was thrilled to get the invitation.

"I did not know what to think really, I could hardly believe it," she said.

"I got a letter first from the Lord Lieutenant to ask if I was free on July 22, and then an invite after that.

"They have sent all the dress codes and I have to get a hat to wear."

The Thornton-le-Clay resident has also been selling poppies for more than 40 years and has the Poppy Collectors Medal and two Bars. She said she loved being a part of community life.

"I just enjoy being where the children are - and I like to know what's going on."
