A NORTH Yorkshire council's rent collection service has notably improved over the past year - a recent inspection has revealed.

A report has praised Selby District Council, stating that council tenants across the area benefit from a customer-friendly service.

Key points in the report include home visits for the vulnerable and the housebound, customers receiving quarterly rent statements and having a range of options to pay their rent, including local offices, direct debit, standing order, post office, the internet, and over the phone.

The inspection, carried out in February, was conducted by the Audit Commission - an independent body responsible for monitoring public money to achieve high-quality local and national services.

Inspectors also suggested ways to improve the service, including working closely with customers to plan improvements and ensuring feedback is acted on.

Malcolm Kilner, Selby District Council's director of corporate services, said: "We are delighted that the Audit Commission has recognised that we have made significant efforts to improve the rent collection service for our 3500 council tenants.

"However, we are not complacent, the council acknowledges the recommendations made in the report and we are constantly striving to improve the service offered to our residents."
