PEOPLE are being given more time to choose which swimming pool they want to see at a redeveloped York Barbican Centre.

City of York Council leader Coun Steve Galloway today indicated that the authority will take written representations on the future of the swimming facilities in a revamped Barbican until August 8.

The city's green councillors raised concerns that the original deadline for residents opinions of July 25 was "laughably short".

But Coun Galloway stressed that the current consultation was regarding the issue of the pool only. There would be further chance to comment on the full plans when they are due to be lodged later in the year.

The city's Labour group members have already protested at the consultation over the Barbican's future branding it "rushed and inadequate".

The plans vary between a "county" standard pool with eight lanes and a "community" pool for children and family. They reveal two vastly contrasting designs with an adjustable floor in the community pool and extensive changing facilities.

The county pool will have room for spectator seats, but a smaller gym than its community equivalent.

Green councillor Mark Hill said: "It has looked to me like this consultation has not been taken seriously."

Coun Galloway said: "We will continue to accept representations for another couple of weeks. There has been some disinformation about consultation by the Labour group and also by the Greens.

"People will be able to write to the council with their views on the pool issue, but we will want to receive all of their representations by August 8."
