THE recent behaviour of the York Labour group and York's Hugh Bayley MP beggars belief.

They claim to be so passionately concerned about the future of swimming in our city and consulting the people.

They made a political protest outside the Barbican centre to register their views (July 24).

However, they seem to have conveniently forgotten that they were the party that caused all the contention and public outrage in the first place by wanting to close a pool.

The councillors concerned are the same people who supported their former leader Rod Hills when he stated in early in 2000: we have an over-provision of swimming in the city; one of the pools is likely to be closed and municipal swimming is dying a death.

At that time Hugh Bayley said planning for leisure was a matter for local councillors and had nothing to do with him.

This attempt to re-write history is an insult to the Evening Press's Save Our Swim campaign, swimmers and the York people who gave such fantastic support to the campaign to save York's pools and swimming heritage.

...COUNCILLOR Jones' comments that closing down pools was never an option for the Labour councillors (Letters, July 8) seem rather strange.

I, along with many others, can clearly remember Rod Hills telling us all just a couple of years ago that there was an over-provision of swimming in the city and that one pool was likely to be closed.

Does Coun Jones also fail to recall the massive campaign in the Evening Press to prevent this from happening?

I do hope this selective amnesia isn't contagious - maybe Coun Jones needs to be quarantined!
