A North Yorkshire racehorse horse will tomorrow on the second day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting be attempting to win the race named in his honour.

Zuhair, trained by David Nicholls, near Thirsk, has such a wonderful record at this meeting that the course executive have renamed the Charlton Handicap - a race he has won for the last four years - the Zuhair Stakes.

Now ten-years-old, the sprinter faces a tough ask to extend his winning sequence to five, but he has run two or three good races in defeat this season and, as Nicholls always says: "The old boy comes alive when he gets to Goodwood - he loves the place."

Tomorrow's showpiece event is the Sussex Stakes, a £285,000 crackerjack of a race.

The field of 11 facing the starter for this one-mile heavyweight contest, includes Trade Fair, unbeaten in both his outings this season, the Classic-placed Zafeen, a Royal Ascot winner last month, and Kevin Darley's mount Where Or When, who beat the mighty Hawk Wing when winning the Queen Elizaberth II Stakes over this course and distance last autumn.

The most likely winner, in my opinion, however, is Kalaman, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, and the mount of Johnny Murtagh, fresh from his brilliantly-executed success on Alamshar in Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

Murtagh, who donned the Aga Khan's colours aboard Alamshar, will be similarly dressed aboard Kalaman, a hugely exciting colt, who looked an unlucky loser behind Zafeen at Royal Ascot.

Trapped behind horses and forced to switch, just as the winner dashed into the lead, Kalaman was cutting him down with every stride towards the finish. Lightly-raced and still on the upgrade, he is awarded my Nap vote.

The £80,000 Tote Gold Trophy Handicap looks a good opportunity for Largo to extend his winning run to three.

This useful performer, trained in Sussex by John Dunlop, who likes nothing better than winners on his local course, is the mount of the soon-to-retire Pat Eddery.

Nevisian Lad underlined his talent earlier this month when winning the July Stakes at Newmarket. Kieren Fallon again teams-up with Michael Bell's colt as he attempts to follow-up in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes.

At Carlisle, Fictional, narrowly beaten by an odds-on favourite on his debut at Pontefract recently, is fancied to go one better in the Abbeytown Maiden Stakes.
