TOWN and parish councillors in the Harrogate area have been invited to a special meeting with North Yorkshire County Council to discuss its draft forward plan.

The consultation meeting, at 7pm in Harrogate Rugby Union Club, Claro Road, on Thursday, August 7, will also provide an opportunity to brief representatives from town and parish councils on the Government's proposals to hold a referendum on regional government in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

The county council says that no other single organisation has a bigger impact on people living and working in North Yorkshire, providing more than three-quarters of local authority services which impact on everyone's life.

These include social services, education, highways, waste management, libraries, economic development and trading standards.

To set out how these services will develop and improve over the next three years the county council has published its draft forward plan.

The council plan focuses on seven key themes:

Security for all - promoting safe, healthy and sustainable communities.

Growing up for the future - through good education and care and protection where it is needed.

Independence - through employment, opportunity and appropriate care and support for those in need.

Keeping the county on the move - with a safe and reliable transport system and powerful telecommunications.

Strengthening the economy - by supporting business, developing our infrastructure and helping people improve their skills.

Looking after the county's heritage - in the countryside and in our towns and villages.

Keeping in touch - by listening to residents' views, planning to meet your needs and by telling you what the council is doing.

People in North Yorkshire and interested groups can obtain a copy of the draft plan by calling 01609-532639 or on the county council website at www.northyorks.gov.uk

Local residents and businesses are encouraged to feed in their views.

One consequence of regional government would be the introduction of unitary local government replacing the district and county council structure.
