THE showers came and went, but the rain could not dampen spirits as the crowds flocked to Ryedale Show on Tuesday.

Competitors of all ages strutted their stuff in the main ring, and rosettes, trophies and cups were handed out to the pick of the bunch.

Farmer Sean Myers, from Rosedale Ayrshires, was hard at work preparing cattle for the judges, while brother Robert tended to his sheep.

Sean, a regular at Ryedale Show, said the family always looked forward to the event.

"For us, it's the local show so we come along anyway, but it's such a natural showground with a real ampitheatre - it's lovely.

"You have got such a big attentive crowd at Ryedale - people are really interested, more country people."

He had a helping hand from two-year-old nephew Dan, who proudly took five-week-old calf Potstella round the ring.

Visitor Helen Batters was at the show for the first time with husband Nick, mother-in-law Jean, two-year-old Amy and son Edward, just ten days old.

"We have brought Amy to see the animals because she loves them," she said.

"She really likes seeing all the tractors too, because she sees them working near where we live in Stamford Bridge."

Ryedale District Council chairman Coun Brian Cottam was admiring the stock in the main ring.

"I think it's marvellous to see the cattle and all the other livestock once more," he said.

"It's always a pleasant day and the setting is beautiful at Welburn Park.

"The show has a reputation for never raining which has not quite proved true, but there have only really been showers here - I think everywhere else got the torrential rain."

David Cormack, from Thirsk, walked away with the prestigious champion of champions title for Limousin bull Woodhouse Pugh.

Mr Cormack said he and his wife, Mary, had had a great year of awards - especially because they only set up on their own 14 months ago.

"We have had a fantastic show season and it's very good to get the champion of champions," he said.

Honorary secretary Peter Woodall said everyone walked away a winner at Ryedale.

"This is a traditional show and we don't bring any star attractions along," he said.

"At Ryedale, the whole show is a star attraction."
