Fishing up in water with caster he loose-fed towards the aerator and soon had the carp boiling on the top. His net of 93lb 13oz included lots of small pasty carp, with odd better fish to 5lb.

Mark Calvert (MAP Elton) was in the opposite corner at 66, where he used the same tactics for 56lb 8oz of carp to 2lb.

The 52 competitors in the Navigation Cup match had to endure swimmers, boaters and paddlers on the Ure at Ripon on Sunday.

Richard Sowerby (Ripon) led from peg 209 above North Bridge, where he alternated caster and maggot on both bomb and waggler for nine chub and 24lb 14oz.

Gordon Shields (Waterline Wibsey) was in the cages above Hewick Bridge and had all his nine chub in the net by lunch time. His 23lb 1oz early bird bag fell to bomb and caster.

On the Railway Pond at Poppleton Ponds 25 fished on Sunday when Tom Peters (Leeds) won with a level 42lb of small carp on pole and pellet.

Tollerton Ponds continues to fish well for tench. The Sunday open match on Kingfisher, was won by north-east visitor Craig Kent (Sunderland) with 35lb 6oz of carp, tench, ide and roach on pole and chopped worm.

The runner-up was his travelling partner Les Bolton (Sunderland) who tied for second with Adrian Davies (York) both anglers having 31lb 8oz.
