MORE than 600 Girl Guides from all over the world will descend on York next week as part of an international guide camp.

The Guides, from America, Nigeria, western Siberia, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, as well as other parts of England, are expected at the event at Askham Bryan from August 9 to 16.

The event offers the girls the opportunity to get together and take part in a range of activities. They will also be able to learn about other cultures and ways of life.

As well as traditional activities there will be off-site events and computer access for the campers.

The guides will also take part in a number of community projects in and around York aimed at giving something back to the community.

Angie Goddard, chief commissioner for Girlguiding North East England said: "The event is a wonderful opportunity for girls from all over the world to get together, share experiences and have a great time.

"Girlguiding is an organisation for the modern girl. We listen and act upon what the girls want to do in their free time, which is increasingly valuable to them.

"The girls said they wanted a camp on this scale and we've done our best to accommodate that.

"Girls have been working hard to raise funds to cover the cost and are involved in the planning for their sub-camp. I'm sure they will all have a great time."

In addition to the campers, more than 300 Rainbows and Brownies will attend an open day aimed at encouraging them to become Guides when they are old enough.

Joanne Thornton, public relations adviser for Girlguiding in North East England, said: "We are empowering girls to travel, have fun, make new friends and try new activities, all in a safe environment."
