Presumably to coincide with the school holidays the Safer York Partnership has launched a campaign headed "A message for parents" highlighting certain criminal behaviour.

Examples include cycling on pavements, playing football in the street and using school premises without permission.

Such offences, as with speeding on motorways, highlight the fact that public attitude matters as much as police resources.

The reduction in drink driving was brought about by the combination of effective policing through breath-testing and a major change in public attitude.

With police numbers having doubled in the past 50 years, those who call for more officers should consider that it is their attitude and that of the wider public to anti-social behaviour and many other crimes that will have as much effect on crime figures as more resources for the police.
