IT would indeed be splendid if Burton Croft could be "restored to its mid-20th century glory", as suggested by Chris Titley.

I have vivid memories of Burton Croft and some of its occupants. As a gauche 16 year old I went there to be interviewed and was fortunate enough to receive a reference from Alderman JB Morrell for my first job at York Central Library. JB Morrell asked me a lot of searching questions and his sense of fair play was immaculate.

I still treasure a gift given to my grandmother by Mrs Morrell, who was a true friend.

Much later, when Burton Croft was a flourishing home for elderly people, my 90-plus neighbour became a resident there. The kind matron and staff allowed me to take in some of the lady's own china. Burton Croft had green crockery at the time and my neighbour happened to be superstitious about that colour.

It will be heart-breaking if this former vibrant family home, with its fascinating garden and such a fabulous and interesting history, is demolished. Burton Croft should definitely be restored for present and future generations to appreciate.
