Malton and Norton GC ladies have reached the eighth round of the Mail on Sunday competition following a 4-0 lashing of Lancaster.

Judy Butler brought home the first point for Malton with a 5 and 4 win and she was soon followed by Jackie Roberts, who won on the 15th green. Solid performances from Janet Rushworth and Emma Duggleby secured the victory. Malton have just one more round to negotiate to reach the national finals in Manchester.

Choice Dobson

Play sparkled at the inaugural Pike Hills GC junior open day in which the highlight was home player Matthew Dobson firing a level-par gross off his ten handicap to win the gross prize. The best nett score was Glen Renton (Forest of Galtres) with a nett 64, gross 76. The best girls' award went to Pike Hills' Hannah batty 99-32-67, while club-mate Chris Lone carded an eagle two at the third hole.

Mel's well

VICTORY in professional Phil Bradley's Day at Forest of Galtres GC went to 24-handicapper Mel Barker on count-back from the club's lady captain, Anne Quarmby, after both carded nett 63's. Nearest the pin on the third hole was Charles Smith and on the ninth in two was Brian Griffin. Gary Wensley won the longest drive prize on the 11th hole.

The Don rules

EIGHT-TIMES Pike Hills' club champion Don Paver also added the senior title to his achievements by scoring 42 points to head an 80-strong field. Hilary Stone became the lady champion for the first time after overcoming the challenge of rival Janice Fisher.

Friday fervour

THE York GC will host a Yorkshire PGA pro-am on Friday, August 29. The entry fee is £195 per team of four to include two out of four medal pro-am, plus buffet. Details from York professional Andrew Hoyles (01904) 490304.

Fox hole fillip

STEVE Fox was in the pink after the Malton and Norton GC 26-handicapper holed in one at a friendly three-ball at the club's 169-yard par-three 17th using a five iron. It was his first ace in 20 years of playing golf.

Ace Carol

YORK GC Lady Captain Carol Pratt achieved her first hole in one in the Taverner Trophy event at Selby. The winner was Judy Eastwood.

In fine Nick

NICK Marchant,14, comfortably won the Forest of Galtres mid-week medal with an outstanding nett 60 off his 11 handicap.
