CLIFTON CC York's Open 50 mile time trial saw strong winds hampering the later starters.

Pre-race favourite Carl Saint, the last starter in the 87 strong field and bronze medallist in the National 50 mile Championships, had to settle for fourth place with 1.47.29 but had the consolation of leading Yorkshire Road Club team mates Steve Woodrup (1.56.22) and Gordon Midgeley (1.57.12) to the team prize.

North Notts Olympic RC's Tony Alcock produced the fastest ride on the day covering the out and back stretch of the A168 and A19 between Dishforth and Crathorne in 1.46.14 while Haxby's Mark Wolstenholme, Pete Read RT, did his Best All Rounder aspirations no harm with a fine ride of 1.47.02 for second place. Third went to VC St. Raphael's Wayne Levett with 1.47.08.

George Young produced the fastest ride from the promoting club but was one of the late starters caught by the strong winds and was unfortunate enough to be blown off his bike in the last ten miles. However ,he was able to remount and produce a personal best ride of 2.02.03.

Congleton CC's Susan Collins won the women's event with 2.02.56 while Seacroft Wheelers' Richard Purchon took the handicap award, his time of 2.10.39 giving him a handicap time of 1.33.39.

Event organiser Viv Hepworth breathed a sigh of relief at the end of the time trial.

No sooner had the last rider passed the timekeeper than a freak shower with gale force winds and hale reduced visibility to vitually nil and would certainly have put the riders at risk had it struck sooner.
