WHEN GNER removed the option of using saver tickets on many of its services a year ago, regular customers were left with no other option than to buy full price standard tickets. The only perceivable advantage of this 40 per cent price hike was complimentary coffee and biscuits - marketed as "StandardPlus".

GNER is withdrawing StandardPlus because it is too difficult to run with so many people using it.

The company explains: "Rather than promise something not all customers can enjoy, we have decided to withdraw the service".

If this is the rationale they use, perhaps they could do the same with the ridiculous concept of Quiet Coach D - another facility they are patently unable to provide.
