It is a sign of winter coming that Beverley stages its final meeting of the season tomorrow, not that Michael Jarvis will be bothered, provided he can send Cartography into winter quarters with another win.

The exciting Newmarket colt contests the Beverley Badges For Presents Novice Stakes.

A hugely impressive winner on his debut at Doncaster, where he broke the course record, Cartography subsequently finished third, beaten little more than two lengths, in a Group 3 race at Kempton, where he raced alone on the far side of the course.

Both those races were over six furlongs, but it should not inconvenience Cartography to return to the minimum trip tomorrow. A useful prospect, he will be hard to beat in the hands of Philip Robinson.

The £10,000 Violet and Eddie Smith Memorial Conditions Stakes, also over five furlongs, takes pride of place on the concluding programme.

A talented bunch of sprinters, including last year's winner Absent Friends, has assembled for this contest, and my vote goes to Smart Predator, a previous course-and-distance winner.

John Quinn's gelding has enjoyed a cracking season and ran better than his unplaced finishing position might suggest when trying to overcome a poor draw in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster last time. Robert Winston has the mount.

The Brian Merrington Memorial Handicap offers Sir Night the chance to get back in the winning groove on course where he was successful in early-summer.

James Bethell's charge has run several good races in defeat since and deserves another tick on his scorecard. He is awarded the nap vote.

The Andy Jones 40 Today Handicap over an extended seven furlongs, Cashneem should go well under top Ryedale apprentice Dave Allan.

Mark Brisbourne's five-year-old has won two of his last three starts and comes here at the top of his form.

At Newmarket, Toronto Heights is recommended for the Bet attheraces Nursery over six furlongs.

Barry Hills' colt failed by only a short-head to get the better of St Regs in handicap company at Warwick last time after being forced to switch to make his challenge.

He is overdue a winning turn and this could be his opportunity. Michael Hills, the trainer's jockey-son, has the mount.

This is a meeting which can throw up some interesting horses for the future from the two-year-old maiden races.

Fifth Column (2.20), representing James Fanshawe and Jamie Spencer, David Loder's Strawberry Fair (2.50), who will be partnered by Frankie Dettori, and the Sir Michael Stoute-Kieren Fallon reprsentative Greek Star (3.25) are a trio of newcomers worth bearing in mind.
