TEENAGE sharp-shooter Matthew Bielby is hoping his incredible archery talents have landed him a place in the book of world records.

The 15-year-old, from Heworth, has lifted no fewer than five UK national junior archery titles this year and the scores he recorded when winning the last two have now been submitted for world record status.

The Millthorpe School pupil, a member of Selby Archers, holds indoor and outdoor longbow archery titles for Yorkshire, the Northern counties and the UK, and in July he added the UK national junior longbow clout title to his haul.

He has now taken his tally to five national crowns by winning the UK junior flight titles for both the under 50lb longbow and unlimited longbow categories.

And his scores for both these categories are being submitted for world record status after FITA, the governing body of archery, recently recognised English longbow flight archery as an international discipline with potential for world record status at both senior and junior level.

Furthermore, junior archery is aged up to 18 so he has three years to up his junior trophy tally or even set new record scores.

"I've been told it will take a while to see if they are new records so we'll have to wait and see," he said.

Matthew took up archery two years ago and has made rapid progress. "I wanted to have a go and my dad did a 'have a go' session at Selby and we both decided to go on a beginners' course and it went on from there," he explained.

"I did not quite expect to make this kind of progress but I hope to keep getting better. I'm pretty happy with the way it's going."
