A SPANISH night class was abandoned at a York school after a stone was thrown through the window.

Glass sprayed across the classroom at Oaklands School in Acomb as stunned students recited the language in small groups.

The Spanish teacher was forced to abandon the session as she was too distressed to carry on.

No one was hurt in the incident.

The school site is among several in the Acomb area which have been plagued by nuisance youths.

A woman who was at the class said several teenagers were loitering outside prior to the incident.

"Our teacher was really shocked and upset so decided to call it off," she said.

"She said she felt something whizz past her leg. Shards of glass went everywhere.

"I'm really worried the class might have to stop.

"We all really enjoy it and this incident won't stop me going."

Deputy head teacher Gavin Cowley said they were investigating who was responsible for the incident.

"Thankfully, no one was hurt," he said.

"We're trying to keep intruders off the school site. It's an issue for the police and our own site security, and we're taking it very seriously."

Mr Cowley confirmed there were several other less serious incidents on the same night.

A spokesman for York police said they were investigating the incident, which happened at about 8pm on Monday.
