AS a former student at York, back on a visit to a city I remember fondly, I was saddened to read the letter "Extra students won't benefit us" (September 3), from M Smith of Bad Bargain Lane. All the more disappointed because I used to live on Bad Bargain Lane and remember it as a friendly and diverse place, a rainbow community where all races, creeds and social types mixed happily.
My recollection is that students are no worse than anyone else, and these anti-student views give a bad name to the famous friendliness, open-mindedness and tolerance of York people.
If I'd had a neighbour like Mrs Smith all those years ago, I'd have thought I'd got a raw deal... if not a bad bargain!
