QUIRKY folkies Alfie should provide welcome relief from the clatter of the burgeoning rock scene.

But something is missing, despite their skilful musicianship. Too often the band's lush harmonies and soothing guitars are accompanied by an annoying tendency to be too clever by half. Ironically, despite this being their third record, the group's most impressive work was in conjuring up the unforgettable string and horn arrangements on Badly Drawn Boy's debut, The Hour Of Bewilderbeast.

Do You Imagine Things? is an improvement on their dull second outing, but still fails to ignite. Standout track People is a great start with its smooth, subtle bassline and gorgeous vocal. But both Mollusc and Protracted highlight the root of Alfie's problem. Their quest for quirkiness make too many promising songs sound awkward and disjointed.

Although now free of BDB's Twisted Nerve label, his simple, melodic magic has not rubbed off on them.
