EMMA Clayton says she is not able to make jam, knit, arrange flowers or do any handicrafts (September 29). I feel sorry for her. She is missing out on things that very many women still enjoy. Creation of anything is very satisfying.

Does she sing, play darts, bowl or golf? Does she enjoy walking, a good debate, a quiz or hearing a good speaker such as Kenneth Clarke's wife?

Would she like to be able to influence local policies by being a school governor or being on the parish council, or have a say in Government via the National Federation of the WI? This is all part of the modern WI, together with old fashioned values and, what her mother obviously valued, friendship.

Everywhere I have lived I have joined the local WI and immediately become part of the local community.

If she doesn't want to join the WI, fair enough, she obviously doesn't know what she is missing. But she shouldn't knock it until she has tried it.

Mrs M A Squires,

Thorpe Lane,

Cawood, Selby.
