THE Deep Blues Club welcomes the return of Delta blues harmonica ace Blind Mississippi Morris for a fourth appearance in York on Tuesday (7th).
Clarksdale, Mississippi, has a population of fewer than 20,000 people, yet this small community has produced many giants of the blues, such as John Lee Hooker, Willie Brown, Ike Turner and Little Junior Parker.
To that list can be added Blind Mississippi Morris (real name Morris Cummings).
Blind since the age of four, Morris grew up next door to Howlin' Wolf's mother. He was cousin to Willie Dixon, was taught to play blues by two further cousins from the Mississippi Sheiks and attended barbecues at his uncle's house where Sonny Boy Williamson was a guest.
Being blind has not stopped Morris enjoying life to the full. He has been married 13 times, has 12 children and is engaged once more. He is also an accomplished car mechanic and likes nothing better than messing around with his 1950 Dodge.
For next Tuesday's 8pm gig at the Post Office Club in Marygate, Morris and stalwart guitarist Brad Webb will have the solid rhythm backing of British soulmate Eddie Juke and his band. Admission is £6, £5 for concessions and CIU members.
