East meets West at York Theatre Royal when Yellow Earth Theatre presents Lear's Daughters in The Studio next Friday and Saturday at 7.45pm.
Britain's only East Asian theatre company will be travelling up from its London base to York for the first time to perform a futuristic urban fairytale devised by The Women's Theatre Group from an idea by Elaine Feinstein.
In this prequel to King Lear, three princesses are locked in their nursery, guarded by two poor servants, a nanny and a jester, who know the secrets of the girls' parents.
When the Queen dies and is buried, scandal is rife and the daughters' marriages are arranged. What ensues is a merry maze of lust, love and jealousy.
Director David KS Tse integrates animation, video, sculpture, music and painting in his production, also interweaving documentary video footage of British Chinese girls trying to communicate with their fathers today, in a mirror of Lear's relationship with his daughters.
Tickets cost £9, £8, under 25s and students £3.50, on 01904 623568.
