THERE was a time when any visit to a Little Chef could be achieved well within our budget. But things have changed. The menu has altered significantly over the years, although remaining consistent in most branches.

Following refurbishment more sophisticated fare has been introduced in some locations.

It was still early enough for breakfast when we made a recent visit.

For Ann it would be the vegetarian breakfast (£5.50). A tomato, two hash browns, three Linda McCartney sausages, mushrooms and beans was about as much as she could eat. Swapping one vegetarian sausage for one of mine, I can't say it was entirely to my taste. No comment from Ann!

My early starter (£5.45) provided bacon and egg, two sausages, half a tomato, beans and friend bread. A satisfying helping spoilt because it cooled quickly having been served on a cold plate. Ann's was the same. We checked to see what else was within our price range. Two slices of toast with jam, marmalade or Marmite (£1.50), a bap containing three items from bacon, egg, sausage and tomato cost £3.50.

A mid-morning snack of say tea (£1.79) or coffee (£1.99) with a toasted teacake (£1.95) would be within budget. And I saw that a Danish pastry with either tea or coffee would cost £2.95. Free drink refills are on offer.

Later in the day we could have stretched to some of the starters. However, all the main courses now fall beyond our definition of a snack.

Having said that, in visiting a Little Chef you know exactly what the quality will be. Staff are quick to provide a drink while you contemplate the menu and having ordered you can be assured that the food will be freshly cooked. And if you don't like it served on a cold plate, say so!
