WHAT a pleasure to be able to see people filming in the city centre for other purposes than protecting profits from shoplifters.

On Saturdays I often chat to tourists, hoping to make them feel as welcome in York as I did when I first arrived.

While rarely attempting to try my smattering of foreign languages, this time, on approaching a film crew on High Ousegate (and expecting them to be "transparent squad" store detectives) I was so pleased to discover their involvement in the twinning of York and Dijon that I dipped into my French to wish them no malice - "Chirac, non a la guerre!"

How pleasant to be surrounded by such charmingly cosmopolitan people. Even the Number 1 bus can be like a mobile youth hostel from Spain, while elsewhere it would just be hostile youths with their mobile phones.

Let's say yes to immigration, no to racism, and instead of deporting refugees, let's deport Mr Blunkett back to Westminster, when he comes sniffing around the university on October 30.

Ren Thomas,

Iver Close,

York.
