CHILDREN from four west York primary schools battled it out at the first ever Lowfield Family Mixed Five-A-Side football tournament.

Six teams of boys and girls took part in the inaugural event organised by Lowfield School with the help of Oaklands Sports College.

Acomb and Westfield 2 went head-to-head in a tense final with Acomb eventually taking the honours in extra time after a 1-1 full time score.

Westfield 1 finished third ahead of fair play trophy winners Copmanthorpe, with Poppleton Road 1 and Poppleton Road 2 fifth and sixth.

The Lowfield tournament is the first of a number of sport festivals lined up for the west side of York in the next few months organised by Oaklands Sports College.

The Oaklands sports partnership aims to give five to 16-year-olds from that part of the city more opportunities to get out and play sport.

All the schools involved in the project are arranged into family groups with several primary schools under a secondary school umbrella.

Sports co-ordinator Cath Lyden said: "It makes my job so worthwhile and rewarding to see so many children having fun and experiencing something new. All the children have taken home an experience and a memory and that's what it's all about."
