THE good people of Selby are to be offered no alternative if the proposed single-tier government comes to fruition.

Selby was part of the old West Riding, the northern boundary being the River Ouse.

In many respects those parishes which lie to the north of the Ouse have never really been accepted by the current Selby District Council.

Why, therefore, does the Government seek to repair something that is not broken and create yet another governmental white elephant?

If changes must be made, and on this I have serious doubts, then in reality parishes to the west and south of Selby should return to the West Riding, albeit now the Leeds Metropolitan area.

Villages to the north of the Ouse, once part of the old East Riding but now having more in common with the north, should form part of the new North Riding.
