THE Press reported that York's Fossgate may be pedestrianised (November 27). The National Cycling Strategy states that cyclists can often be integrated into areas from which motor vehicles are restricted.

Cycling bans should not be implemented unless satisfactory alternative routes can be found.

Previous British pedestrianisation schemes have created inconvenient detours on busy peripheral roads, which becomes a major deterrent to cycle use.

A bike can often get its user closer to their destination than other transport.

This time-saving advantage must not be eroded if levels of cycle use from city suburbs are to be sustained.
