REGARDING the name Cinder Lane/ Path, (Letters, December 8), I have a number of York street plans dating from 1900. All these name the path from Wilton Rise to Leeman Road as Cinder Lane.
There are four footpaths in the city with this name, the other three being the path by the river, a continuation of Jubilee Terrace to Lendal Bridge; the path from St Peter's School boathouse to Clifton; and the road and path from Heworth Green to East Parade.
There were a large number of paths with this name around the country derived from the fact that a cheap surface was made from the readily available locomotive ash in the days of steam.
