MANOR School were a dominant force in the York and District Schools Cross Country Championships on Knavesmire.

They scored individual and team successes as a record 600 runners from 22 schools took part in drier conditions compared to recent years.

The Intermediate Boys' race was reduced to a contest between Manor's Tom Bean and last year's Junior winner, Philip Graves (Archbishop Holgate's).

Bean has been a regular in the event since his Year 7 days but had never finished higher than fourth. This time, in his last year, his training paid off as he pulled away from the top of the last hill and held on for victory.

There was further success for Manor when Kieran Smith won the Year 7 race convincingly, and the school's Junior and Intermediate Boys' teams both won their team competitions.

The Junior Boys' race was dominated by Holy Family's Michael Williams, with Sam Bradley (Archbishop Holgate's) in second place. Williams was also the leading Year 8 runner.

Emma Macalister-Hall won her fourth consecutive York Schools title by taking the Intermediate Girls' race.

Despite being unwell and having to run cautiously, the St Peter's athlete managed to keep ahead of two greatly improving runners, Charlotte Maxted (Tadcaster) and Emma Willits (Fulford). Tadcaster convincingly won the team event in this age group.

Queen Margaret's, Escrick, won the Year 7 and Junior Girls' team events, and provided the individual Year 7 winner in Katie Lambert, who has also shown good form in their English Schools Cup fixtures.

The Junior Girls' Individual race was won by Victoria Graves (Archbishop Holgate's) who used all her determination and race experience to hold off the impressive Sophie Hunter (Millthorpe), who was in second place and the leading Year 8 runner.

The first 20 runners in each race received invitations to represent the area in fixtures after Christmas. Any runners who have lost their letter should see their PE teacher or try to come to the training session on Sunday at 11.15am at Hamilton Panthers FC pavilion on Knavesmire.
