Colin Graves, managing director of York-based Costcutter Supermarkets Ltd, has been presented with The Asian Trader's Editors Special Award, in London.

The award is in recognition of his "immense contribution to the success of the independent sector".

In the citation, Mr Graves, is described as "a man of vision and action. A man who has not only spent most of his working life in the grocery industry but made an immense contribution to the success of the independent sector"

Mr Graves, who founded Costcutter from his home in Dunnington 16 years ago and turned it into a 1,200 store giant, growing at 80 stores per year, was delighted. He said: "It's always great to receive awards for your efforts, but this is very special because The Asian Trader is highly respected and knows the industry inside out."
