SEEK out Santa's little helpers to put you on the right track.

More staff are being recruited by York-based railway service GNER to lend a helping hand to thousands of extra passengers who will be travelling over the Christmas and New Year holiday.

At least 40,000 passengers a day will use GNER's high-speed services to travel home to visit friends and relatives in the run-up to Christmas.

A spokesman for GNER said: "Many passengers travel infrequently and look for help and reassurance during their journey, particularly at stations."

Dubbed "Santa's little helpers", GNER's teams of extra staff will be at York as well as Kings Cross, Leeds, Darlington, Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley stations from today until January 3 to help guide passengers to trains and offer help with baggage.

GNER is also offering a free baggage check-in service for passengers travelling between London King's Cross and Edinburgh.

Full details of train times and fares for travel between London, the East Midlands, Yorkshire, the North East of England and Scotland are available from GNER's telecentre on 08457 225225 and National Rail Inquiries on 08457 484950.
