FARMER Andrew Wainwright should be supported in his rightful fight to fly the Yorkshire flag (December 10). The 'jobsworths' at Ryedale District Council are adopting a spiteful, nit-picking attitude and would qualify to play the part of Scrooge in a Christmas pantomime.

I fly the Yorkshire and St George flags - sometimes together on the same pole - in my front garden without any intervention by Doncaster Council or the parish council.

I live in a conservation area and do not need planning permission or consent.

The residents of Sproxton and the rest of Yorkshire should all rally to support Mr Wainwright and fly their own Yorkshire and St George flags now and in the future.

I wonder whether Rydedale District Council would have been so eager to act if it was a European Union Flag that was being flown?

...IN response to the letter in the Press from Mr Mooney of Bridlington about the Yorkshire Rose, (December 17) I checked two or three years ago with the College Of Heralds about the correct way up the flag - the Yorkshire Rose - should be. I was advised by one of their herald pursuivant that there is no official or legal way up.

The rose can be either way up, therefore Mr Mooney's letter is incorrect.

...D Mooney's letter about the right way up for the Yorkshire Rose (December 17) shows his ignorance.

After the Wars Of The Roses in 1455, Yorkshire changed its rose to white and stood it on its point therefore forming a 'Y' as opposed to the red rose of Lancashire.
